
KEY EVENTS
12 Jul 1509 - Trial of EDMUND DUDLEY, following his arrest in Apr 1509 for 'constructive treason' on the death of Henry VII. Pleads 'not guilty' to charges set against him.
18 Jul 1509 - EDMUND DUDLEY is found guilty on charges of high treason, following trial at Guildhall and is sentenced to death; he is later executed on Tower Hill on 17 Aug 1510.
01 Dec 1541 - Trial of Thomas Culpepper and Francis Dereham held in the Great Hall; JOHN RUSSELL as Lord High Admiral and EDWARD SEYMOUR (as Earl of Hertford) present as jurors. Both are found guilty of having sexual relations with Catherine Howard, and sentenced to death. Co-accused Jane Parker, Lady Rochford, was found to be unfit to stand trial, and had been moved from the Tower of London, to Russell House, into the custody of the Admiral.
18 Jun 1546 - Trial of Reformist Preacher Anne Askew (as 'Anne Kyme'), along with 3 other men; Anne had been arrested for the third (and final) time, regarding her preachings, specifically her views challenging transubstantiation. All were found guilty on charges of heresy, and were sentenced to death., following which they were returned to the Tower of London,
Anne was subject to torture in the Tower of London, prior to her being burnt to death at the stake at Smithfield Marketplace on 16 Jul 1546.
13 Jan 1547 - Trial of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey (father of THOMAS HOWARD, later 4th Duke of Norfolk), held at Guildhall; had been arraigned on charges of high treason, following quartering his coat of arms with those of Edward the Confessor's. Was found guilty, and sentenced to death; was executed on 19 Jan 1547, the last man to be so in the reign of Henry VIII, who died 9 days later.
13 Nov 1553 - Trial of JANE GREY, GUILDFORD DUDLEY, HARRY DUDLEY, AMBROSE DUDLEY and Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, in the Great Hall at the Guildhall, City of London, following charges of high treason.
All were marched on foot from the Tower of London, approx 1 mile away, escorted by the Constable of the Tower Sir John Gage.
All were found guilty on these charges, to which they had all admitted guilt, and all were sentenced to death; they then returned to the tower.
Jane Grey, Guildford Dudley and Thomas Cranmer were later executed; Harry and Ambrose Dudley were later released from the Tower of London and pardoned by MARY I.
22 Jan 1554 - Trial of ROBERT DUDLEY at Guildhall, City of London; was accompanied from Tower of London by Constable Sir John Gage. Was found guilty of treason and sentenced to death.
Was later released from the Tower of London in Oct 1554, and pardoned by MARY I on 22 Jan 1555.
